A variation on the prolific Whiskey Sour (whiskey, lemon juice, egg whites, and simple syrup), a New York Sour is a more romantic cocktail which adopts its air of sensuality via a splash of red wine floating at the top of the drink. While this is traditionally accomplished by carefully pouring the wine onto the back of an upside down spoon, our New York Sour recipe uses large ice cubes from ZOKU’s Love Ice Tray to create the same effect with less risk of spill.
New York Sour
SERVING SIZE: Makes 2 cocktails
INGREDIENTS:
4 oz Irish Whiskey
1.5 oz lemon juice
2 oz pasteurized egg whites
1 oz simple syrup
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Red wine to taste (about 0.5 oz in each glass)
DIRECTIONS:
1. Combine the whiskey, lemon juice, egg whites, simple syrup, and bitters in a cocktail shaker with ice (if you don’t own a shaker, you can try using a large mason jar with a lid). Shake vigorously for about 60 seconds.
2. Strain into a lowball glass with ice. For best results, we recommend placing two cubes from ZOKU’s Love Ice Tray in each glass before straining.
3. Gently pour your wine directly onto the Love Ice, allowing the wine to remain floating at the top of your New York Sour to create an ombre effect.
